The audit

Where the money actually leaks out of an account

Almost every account we are handed is losing a meaningful share of its budget to the same handful of things. None of them are exotic, and all of them are fixable in the first fortnight.

Broad match with no negatives

Broad match will find you searches you never intended to buy. Without a negative keyword list built and maintained, a plumber ends up paying for “plumbing apprenticeship” and “how to fix a tap yourself”. This is the single most common leak and the fastest to plug.

Conversion tracking that lies

If a form view counts as a conversion, or one enquiry fires three tags, every optimisation decision after that is made on bad numbers. We verify tracking end to end before touching bids, because everything downstream depends on it.

Performance Max with no guardrails

Left alone it will spend on brand searches you would have won for free, and on placements that never convert. It works well with brand exclusions, proper asset groups and a clean conversion signal. It works badly out of the box.

Landing pages that were never built for it

Sending paid traffic to a homepage is the most expensive habit in the account. The ad promises one thing, the page talks about everything, and the click is wasted. Match the page to the search and the same budget buys more.

Want to know what your account is actually spending on?

Give us view access and we will go through the search terms, the tracking and the structure, then tell you straight what is working and what is being wasted. No charge, and no obligation.

How it runs

What the first ninety days actually look like

Paid search is not set and forget. It is set, measure, cut, and repeat, and most of the gain comes from the cutting.

01

Week one, get the measurement right

Conversion tracking, call tracking, and agreement on what counts as a lead. If a quote request and a newsletter signup both count as one conversion, the account will optimise towards the cheaper one and you will wonder where the enquiries went.

02

Week two, agree the budget and go live

We agree a monthly number before anything runs, and the campaigns are built to spend inside it. Tight keyword groups, ad copy written for the search rather than the character limit, and landing pages that match what the ad promised.

03

Weeks three to six, cut the waste

This is where the money is. Search term reports every week, negatives added, losing keywords paused, budget moved to what is converting. An account usually gets cheaper per lead before it gets bigger.

04

Ongoing, test and report

New ad variants, new landing pages, bid strategy changes tested one at a time so you can tell what caused what. Reporting is one page: spend, leads, cost per lead, and what we changed.

The two together

Paid and organic are cheaper run together

Run in isolation, each one wastes something. SEO leaves you invisible for months while the pages earn their position. Paid search leaves you paying full price for searches you could rank for.

Run together they feed each other. Paid search tells you within weeks which keywords actually convert, which is the single most useful input into an SEO plan and normally takes months to learn otherwise. SEO then takes over the terms it can win, and the paid budget moves to the ones that are genuinely too competitive to earn.

That is why we quote them separately but plan them as one thing.

What we manage

The campaign types worth running

Not every business needs all of these. Most need two or three, and the audit will say which.

Search

The core of nearly every account. Somebody types what they want and you appear. Highest intent, easiest to measure, and where we start unless there is a reason not to.

Performance Max

Google’s automated campaign across search, shopping, display, YouTube and Gmail. Powerful with the right exclusions and signals, expensive without them.

Shopping

For anyone selling products online. Most of the work is in the product feed rather than the campaign, which is where the wins hide.

Remarketing

The cheapest traffic you will buy, because these people have already been to your site. Usually the highest returning campaign in the account.

Local and call ads

For trades and service businesses where a phone call is the conversion. Ads that lead with the number, tied to your Google Business Profile.

Landing pages

Built in house alongside the campaign. A page written for one search converts better than a homepage that has to serve everyone.

Nex Gen Digital Agency has been an absolute game changer for our business. From the very beginning, the team has been professional, responsive and genuinely invested in helping us grow rather than simply delivering a service and moving on for us at Unmatched Support Services. A special mention has to go to Paul Sera, who has honestly been a godsend and a saviour throughout the whole process. His knowledge, patience and willingness to go above and beyond have made a huge difference.

Common questions

Google Ads and PPC FAQs

The questions we get asked most often, answered straight.

Is it called AdWords or Google Ads?

Google Ads. Google renamed AdWords in 2018, along with folding DoubleClick and Analytics 360 into the Google Marketing Platform. Plenty of people still say AdWords, and plenty still search for it, which is why this page uses both. The product is the same.

How much should I spend on Google Ads?

Enough to get meaningful data in a reasonable time, which depends entirely on what a click costs in your industry. A trade paying eight dollars a click needs a very different number to a lawyer paying forty. What matters more than the number is knowing your cost per lead and what a lead is worth to you. We work that out with you before anything goes live, and if the maths does not work we will say so.

What do you charge on top of the ad spend?

Management is quoted separately from spend, and the spend goes to Google from your own account, not through us. That means you can see exactly what you paid Google and exactly what you paid us. Agencies that bundle the two make it very hard to tell whether the campaign or the fee is the expensive part.

Who owns the Google Ads account?

You do. We build it in your name and we manage it under our agency access. If you leave, the account, the history, the conversion data and the learning stay with you. An agency that keeps the account on their own MCC and will not release it is holding your data hostage, and that arrangement is more common than it should be.

How quickly will I see results?

Traffic within hours of approval. Meaningful results take longer, because the first month is largely about finding out which searches are wasting money and cutting them. Most accounts get cheaper per lead in the second month than the first. Anyone promising a fixed cost per lead before looking at your market is guessing.

Should I do Google Ads or SEO?

Usually both, starting with ads. Ads switch on immediately and, more usefully, tell you within weeks which keywords actually turn into enquiries. That is the most valuable input into an SEO plan and it normally takes months to learn any other way. SEO then takes over the terms it can realistically win, and the paid budget concentrates on the ones that are too competitive to earn.
