Custom website design, and when you actually need it

Custom website design means the layout, the page structure and the code are planned and built for your business, rather than adapted from a pre-made theme. Each page starts from what your customers are trying to find and what you want them to do next, and the design follows from that instead of the other way around.

It costs more than a template build, and for plenty of businesses it is the wrong choice. Anyone who sells you custom work without first asking what the site has to achieve is selling, not advising. We would rather tell you a well-chosen theme will do the job than build something you did not need.

We quote a fixed price for each project after a scoping conversation, so you know the number before anything starts.

Talk Through Your Project
Custom versus template

Custom versus template, honestly

Neither one is better in general. Each suits a particular kind of business, and the difference shows up in four places.

Template build

Where the design comes from. A ready-made theme, adjusted to your colours, fonts, photos and words.

Page speed. The theme ships code for every feature it offers, whether your site uses those features or not.

Changing it later. Simple inside the options the theme allows, awkward or impossible outside them.

Best for. A clear, conventional offer that customers already understand, on a tighter budget.

Custom build

Where the design comes from. Drawn around your content, your customers and the enquiry you want each page to produce.

Page speed. Each page loads only what it needs, which makes quick mobile load times far easier to hold.

Changing it later. Anything can change, although larger changes are quoted as separate work.

Best for. An unusual structure, several different audiences, or a business that has outgrown its theme.

Scope

What goes into a custom build

These are the stages of a custom project. Ask for every one of them to be itemised in any quote you get, ours included, because vague scope is what causes problems later.

01

Discovery

We work out what the site has to achieve, who it is for and what is getting in the way on the current one.

02

Structure

Pages, navigation and URLs are mapped before anything is designed, so every page has one clear job.

03

Design

Layouts are drawn for your content and your customers, then signed off before the build begins.

04

Build

Hand-coded or built on the CMS you prefer, responsive on every device and kept free of unused code.

05

Content

Copy, photos and any content moving across from your old site are written, sourced or migrated.

06

Testing

Forms, speed, accessibility and layout are checked on real devices rather than trusted to a browser preview.

07

Launch

Old URLs are redirected to their new homes so existing rankings and links carry across to the new site.

08

Handover

Files, logins and access go to you, with ongoing care available if you want us to keep looking after it.

Cost

What drives the cost of a custom website

We do not publish a price list for custom work, because two sites with the same number of pages can be very different jobs. These four things move the number most.

Unique layouts

Ten pages that share two layouts cost far less to design and build than ten pages that each need their own. The number of distinct page types matters more than the page count.

What the site has to do

Online bookings, a store, member areas, quote calculators and connections to your CRM or accounting software each add design, build and testing time.

Content

Whether you supply finished copy and photos, or we write and source them, changes the scope considerably. So does the volume of existing content that has to move across.

Migration and redirects

Rebuilding an established site means mapping every old URL that has rankings or links, then redirecting it properly. Skipping that step is a common reason traffic drops after a relaunch.

How long a custom build takes

Longer than a template build, because the design is drawn rather than adjusted, and every layout is signed off before it is coded. Scope sets the baseline. In practice the timeline is usually decided by how quickly copy, photos and approvals come back, which is why we agree up front on exactly what is needed from you and when.

We have written up the realistic phases, and where projects tend to stall, in how long a website rebuild should take.

Already have a site? Run it through our free SEO audit tool first, so the rebuild fixes what is actually broken rather than what simply looks dated.

Against our own interest

When a template is the better answer

If any of these describe you, we will say so, and point you to a well-chosen theme set up properly rather than a custom build you do not need.

You need to be live soon

A new business with a simple offer is better served by a clean site that is online now than a perfect one that is still in design next season.

The money is needed elsewhere

If the budget only stretches to one thing, good photography, a properly set up Google Business Profile or a few months of search ads may earn more than custom design.

A good theme already fits

Some industries have well-built themes that suit the way customers buy. Paying to redraw what already works is money spent on taste, not results.

The business is still changing

If your services, pricing or market are likely to shift within a year or two, a lighter build you can outgrow is the more sensible first step.

Ownership

What you own at the end

If you want help with search visibility once the site is live, our Melbourne web design team works alongside our small business SEO service, so the build and the rankings are planned together.

The website

The finished site is yours. It is hand-built rather than locked to a page builder, and you can host it wherever you like.

The accounts around it

Your domain, analytics, Search Console and Google Business Profile should sit in accounts registered to your business, with us added as a user.

Who looks after it

We are happy to keep looking after the site after launch, but you are not tied to us to keep it running.

Common questions

Custom website design FAQs

The questions we get asked most often, answered straight.

How much does a custom website cost?

It depends on how many distinct page layouts the site needs, what it has to do beyond displaying pages, and how much content has to be written or moved. We do not publish a price list for custom work. After a scoping call we give you a fixed price for the project, so you know the cost before anything starts.

How long does a custom website take to build?

Longer than a template build, because each layout is designed and signed off before it is coded. The biggest variable is usually content: copy, photos and approvals. Our guide to how long a website rebuild should take walks through each phase.

Do I need a custom website, or will a template do?

If your offer is conventional, your budget is tight or you need to be online quickly, a template is often the better call. Custom design earns its cost when your structure is unusual, you serve several audiences, or a theme is holding back your page speed and enquiries.

Will rebuilding my website hurt my Google rankings?

It can, if old URLs disappear without redirects or if content that ranks is cut. A careful rebuild keeps the URLs that rank, redirects the ones that change, and is checked in Search Console after launch. Our free SEO audit tool shows where your current site stands before you change anything.
