Ecommerce website design, built to sell

Ecommerce website design is the part of a store that decides whether a visitor buys. It covers how products are found, how a product page reads on a phone, and how few steps sit between the cart and a finished order. A store can look polished and still lose sales at every one of those points.

We design and build online stores on Shopify and WooCommerce. We are a Shopify Partner, so platform setup is handled directly rather than through a third party, and product feeds are connected to Google Merchant Centre so your range can appear in Google Shopping.

Every store is quoted at a fixed price after a scoping conversation, so you know the number before anything starts.

Talk About Your Store
Choosing a platform

Shopify or WooCommerce, which one?

We build on both, so we have no reason to push you toward either. The right choice depends on who will run the store day to day and what it has to connect to.

Shopify

How it runs. Hosted for you. Hosting, security and the checkout are maintained by Shopify, for a monthly subscription with payment and app costs on top.

Best for. Owners who want to sell without managing a server, and stores that expect to add products and sales channels over time.

Watch for. Monthly app subscriptions add up quickly, and some things are fixed by the platform, including parts of the checkout and the URL structure.

Try it first. You can start a free Shopify trial through our partner link and see how the admin feels before you commit.

WooCommerce

How it runs. A store built into WordPress, on hosting you choose. There is no platform subscription, but hosting, security and updates have to be looked after.

Best for. Businesses already on WordPress, stores that sit alongside a lot of content, and product logic that needs to be customised.

Watch for. Plugins need regular updates. Our guide to how often WordPress plugins should be updated explains why that matters for a store.

Looked after for you. If you would rather not manage updates yourself, our WordPress care plans cover it.

What we build

The parts of a store that decide the sale

Design time goes where buying decisions are made, not on decoration that slows the page down.

01

Product pages

Photos, price, stock, delivery and returns readable on a phone without hunting, with the add to cart button always in reach.

02

Collections and search

Categories, filters and search arranged around how your customers shop, so a product is never more than a few taps away.

03

Checkout

Checkout and funnel optimisation to remove the steps and surprises that make people leave a full cart behind.

04

Feeds and Merchant Centre

Product data set up for Google Merchant Centre, so your range is ready for Google Shopping and free product listings.

Where store design and SEO meet

Many of the decisions that decide whether a store is found in Google are made while it is being designed: how collections are structured, whether category pages carry useful copy, how fast product pages load on a phone, and what happens to old URLs when a store is rebuilt.

We make those decisions with search in mind from the first wireframe. Once the store is live, our ecommerce SEO service takes over the ongoing work of getting it found. If you run a Shopify store already, our Shopify SEO checklist for Australian stores is a good place to see where it stands.

Replatforming

Moving an existing store

Rebuilding or changing platform is a common point for an established store to lose traffic. These three things are planned before anything moves.

Every URL accounted for

Old product and category URLs that have rankings or links are mapped to their new homes and redirected, so search visibility carries across.

Products and content

Product data, descriptions and images are moved and checked, rather than assumed to have come across intact.

Checked after launch

Redirects, product feeds and Search Console are checked once the new store is live, so problems are caught early rather than found weeks later.

Ownership

Your store, in your name

Want something other than a store? See our web design and development service, or small business website design for a smaller site.

The store account

Your Shopify store or WordPress site, and the domain it runs on, should be registered to your business, with us added as a staff user.

Customers and orders

Your customer list, order history and product data belong to you, and stay with you whoever looks after the store.

Who looks after it

We are happy to keep looking after the store after launch, but you are not tied to us to keep it running.

Common questions

Ecommerce website design FAQs

The questions we get asked most often, answered straight.

How much does an ecommerce website cost?

It depends on the platform, the size of the range, whether the design is custom or built on a theme, and what the store has to connect to, such as inventory, accounting or shipping software. Moving an existing store adds to the scope. We give you a fixed price after a scoping conversation, so you know the cost before anything starts.

Should I use Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify suits owners who want the platform to handle hosting, security and checkout for a monthly fee. WooCommerce suits businesses already on WordPress, or stores that need custom product logic and are happy to keep plugins updated. We build on both, so we will recommend whichever fits how you run the business.

Can you move my store from another platform?

Yes. A move is planned around your existing URLs, so old product and category pages that have rankings are redirected to their new versions, and the product data is checked after it moves rather than assumed to be correct.

Do I need ecommerce SEO as well as a new store?

A well-built store gives Google a clean structure to work with, but it will not compete for searches on its own. Our ecommerce SEO service covers the ongoing work, from product pages to feeds.
